Kinewell lake, Ringstead
A beautiful haven for wildlife, particularly water birds. Managed, but not over managed, by a small group of volunteers. It was here, 30 years ago, my then boyfriend, now husband proposed to me.

Irthlingborough Lakes and Meadows Nature Reserve
I love the feeling of openness you get when walking through the reserve along the Greenway and there is always something to see that makes me smile no matter what time of year, whether it's dragonflies and butterflies enjoying the summer sunshine or flocks of birds coming in to land in the winter.

Newton Field Centre
This field centre is a fantastic, and hidden, resource! Based in a converted church in the tiny village of Newton, this site is filled with history and the centre managed meadows are blooming marvellous in the summer (excuse the pun!)

Wadenhoe and the view upstream
I got married in Wadenhoe and during the two days I was there we climbed up to the church outside the village to see the magnificent views up the river. Shame about the Ikea building in the distance though.

Pitsford Nature Reserve and SSSI
There are many places that I value, which include Stortons Gravel Pits at Sixfields Northampton, Blueberry Farm near Maidwell and Harrington Airfield but above all I value Pitsford Nature Reserve which is closest to my home and provides as much as any of the other sites in terms of the ticking the boxes below.

Lots and lots of different footpaths offering a multitude of routes through the superbly quiet countryside. The Willowbrook burbling, a pub in every village, the Fineshade/Wakerley woods complex, a diisused railway line and two SSSs.Fantastic variety and some precious wildlife havens.

Weedon Bec and Flore Area.
At this point the Nene is not a full-scale river - more a large stream. It forms the southern boundary of Flore parish, and includes a water mill and flood defences. There is a flood plain and what amount to water meadows south of Flore village, which are a particular delight in both Summer and Winter.
At this point the river has a more or less undisturbed and untamed feel to it, unlike many areas further downstream.

A largely unappreciated asset.
Since moving to Northamptonshire in the late 60s my knowledge and appreciation has grown. I have walked several sections of the Nene Valley Way and valued the somewhat late use of the former Northampton - Peterborough (and Kettering - Cambridge) railway lines as footpaths and cycle ways. I have lived close to the northern source of the River Nene as well a in Irthlingborough and Higham Ferrers and know the Ferry Meadows park in Peterborough. Stanwick Lakes is a welcome and well used leisure and environmental resource but I was sad that the discussions at the Frontier Centre in 2006/7? about imaginatively developing the adjacent sites of Stanwick Lakes, the Frontier Centre and the 27 acres at Nene Park came to nothing.
Having been concerned about the large amount of gravel extraction along the Nene Valley close to Irthlingborough I am relieved that the resultant environmental requirements of planning permission have begun to enhance the area.
